Everybody loves a good success story, and boy do I have one for you today. I want to introduce you to my friend Dana Neve. She is a highly-successful BeachBody coach who lives in Minneapolis. Like me, she’s a hard-working momma, devoted wife, and business owner with a super-crazy schedule. And somehow she makes it all work – with a fantastic body, to boot! What I hope you learn from Dana is that fit and healthy comes in all shapes and sizes.
We all have different paths toward becoming healthier and more fit, and Dana’s story is inspiring on so many levels because she went through her own transformation before making fitness her career. I’m not going to spoil it, because I’d rather Dana tell you in her own words!
KARMA: Hi Dana! Thank you so much for taking the time to talk today. Please tell us about your journey. Was there a specific “turning point” where you realized that a change had to be made in your life?
DANA: I was always thin and “in shape” without having to try. I ate whatever I wanted and my body never changed. I had my first child at 20 years old and I managed to get my six pack abs back pretty quick. My dad was a runner, and so was I. I always loved working out, but because my body never changed, I wasn’t as committed to it. I would workout for maybe three months, and then take time away. I did it, but I wasn’t doing it to be fit. I had no idea how nutrition affected your health.
In 1998, shortly after having our second child, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I was really sick, and it was almost like I had the flu constantly. When you feel like that, you don’t want to exercise. So I didn’t. I was on medication, and those eventually gave me heart palpitations. That really scared me! That was enough to make me realize I had to take things into my own hands.
KARMA: Wow! So what were some of the immediate benefits? Were you scared?
DANA: I finally started to believe exercise and proper nutrition was the key to healing. I felt like, even if this plan didn’t work, I would at least be taking better care of my body. So I eliminated all processed foods and all the extra junk and began eating organic foods. Over the course of maybe a year, I was completely healed. Then I started added in exercise. It wasn’t easy at first, but I stuck with it and after a while things got better. It got to the point where I HAD to go to the gym. It became a daily thing.
KARMA: How inspiring! So what brought you to BeachBody?
DANA: It was around 2010 and my very best friend was living in Texas. At the time, I was obsessed with the INSANITY workouts but I had been doing it for about six months and was looking for a different program. My friend was doing P90X and happened to bump into (you) while out to dinner one night. She told me how this lady named Karma was doing BeachBody and that she was doing a hybrid workout of P90X and Insanity. We didn’t connect right away, and after several months went by, I started researching programs on my own. I just remember telling my husband that I wanted to work for BeachBody. I saw that I could be a coach. That’s when I eventually met Karma, and I signed up as a coach in 2011. I have 1,000’s customers that I’m helping now, getting to help them change their lives.
KARMA: What would you say has been the biggest benefit to being a BeachBody coach?
DANA: From a fitness perspective, it has taken me out of my comfort zone because as a coach, you have to personally try every program out there so you can give your clients an honest assessment. In the past, I never would have tried something like that. BeachBody has taught me to try new things and stick with things that I wouldn’t normally do. And of course, that mindset has flowed into everything else in my life. I have a never-give-up attitude, and it gave me more determination. I can also see the potential in everyone else I work with, too. Exercise and nutrition does more than just transform your body. It affects your relationships, your job … everything!
KARMA: What would you say to those who are struggling with making this type of lifestyle change?
DANA: Everybody goes through different obstacles. Everybody has their “why?” and their own journey and their own goals. My reason was my health. I wanted to be here for my kids, and the thought of not being here or being sick all the time was scary. I can’t even describe what it’s been like. It’s the best!
Fit and healthy comes in all shapes and sizes. My before and after pictures aren’t a very extreme physical transformation… On the outside.
While the pictures represent a 14 lb difference it is so much more to me than that. My before picture represents tired, low energy, and struggling with fibromyalgia. In that picture I am 14 lbs more than what I am used to. Yet some people thought I looked so much better with “a little more meat on my bones”.
Don’t ever let anyone’s opinion of you dictate how you control your health. Nobody is ever going to care about your health as much as you do.
My after picture…. FULL of energy, living a positive and healthy lifestyle, exercising 5-6 times a week, feeling strong and fit …. And not caring whether I look better with “a little more meat on my bones” because I FEEL FABULOUS!
I am so proud of my friend Dana, her dedication to change her lifestyle and live more healthy for herself and her family. Are you ready?
